Week Ahead: Week 4 Term 1, Monday 19th – Sunday 25th February
Timetable Update
Over the weekend we will update the school timetable. As many of you will appreciate, we have intentionally limited the size/s of our Y9 and Y10 classes. We see personal growth and development in the junior school as fundamental to success as a senior student. The purpose of the timetable update is to rebalance some classes.
We will begin class on Monday with a tutor period. At this time, new timetables will be distributed to some students.
Policy Review
Through Term 1 the Board will review Te Tiriti o Waitangi, Board Responsibility, School Character* / Special Character*, and Documentation and Self-Review Policies. The school community is invited to contribute to this review, as per:

- Follow the link to the relevant policy as listed
- Read the policy
- Click the Start your review button at the top right-hand corner of the page
- Select the reviewer type. Enter your name (optional)
- Follow the prompts to show that you’ve read the topic and enter your feedback if you would like to comment
- Agree to the privacy statement and click “Submit review”.
- If you do not have internet access, the school office staff can provide you with printed copies of the policy and a review form.
Rotary Youth Exchange
The Rotary International Youth Exchange programme is a one-year exchange designed for students who will be aged 16 or 17 in the January of the year that they leave New Zealand.
A participant spends one year living in another country, learning the language and culture of that country and attending school. They live with 3 or 4 host families and are hosted by a local Rotary club. When they return to New Zealand the following January, they are more confident, independent and mature and with a greater understanding of how other people live.
To go on the exchange students are required to apply through a local Rotary club – applications close in late February 2024 – attend a further interview and selection process by the District Committee responsible for administering the programme and then take part in a series of orientation days. This process ensures that students are prepared for their year away, and that they will be good ambassadors.

Viral Meningitis
The Hawke’s Bay District Health Board has asked us to communicate to the community that cases of viral meningitis have increased in recent weeks. More information can be found here.
New Phone Rules 2024
New Government regulations require that schools must ensure students do not use or access a phone while they are attending school, including during lunch time and breaks.

L1 Art: MTG Pūrākau o te Whenua – Mon
Year 11 Art students are visiting the MTG on Monday, 19 February. The visit relates to their first internal assessment. The assessment focuses on connections to the land, and where we live. Students will visit Pūrākau o Te Whenua, stories of the land at the Museum and research the story of Pania and Cape Kidnappers.
L3 Agriculture: East Coast Farming Expo
L3 Agriculture students travel to Wairoa Wednesday, 21 February to connect and interact with industry innovators at the East Coast Farming Expo. The expo brings forward-thinking speakers to ignite conversations, share insights and make positive changes in the industry.
Music Department
Itinerant music lessons start on Monday and run every day of the week. Practice rooms are available for use before, during and after school for bands and groups who want to practice. Students that have not yet signed-up for lessons should contact the HOD Music, Mr Shirriffs
Romeo and Juliet
L1 Music, L2 Music, L3 Music and all Year 10 Music Students have been selected to attend the Romeo and Juliet Opera. This is funded by Pub Chairty and a fantastic opportunity to see a quality display of the best opera.
The boys are to attend Period 1 on Monday 19th February and then they are walking to the Municipal Theatre, they will then walk back to school, unless given permission to be released from the Opera (parents must email kmccallum@nbhs.school.nz to allow this) The opera is scheduled to finish at 1.45pm.
Permission slips and information has been sent to parents via school bridge.
Old boy Iseo Pancotti is playing the principal role of Paris. We also have Harley Shaw in the chorus
Waikato University Nutrition Seminar
A select group of students will attend a nutrition and fitness workshop on Thursday, 22 February. The workshop is led by one of Waikato University’s senior academics, Dr. Martyn Bevan, with the assistance of PHD students.
NCEA External Examinations – review & reconsiderations
Students can apply for a review or reconsideration of their marked script. Information on this process is found here: Reviews and reconsiderations » NZQA
The closing date for NZQA reviews and reconsiderations is 21 February.
