Week Ahead: Week 1 Term 2, Monday 29 April – Sunday 5th May
Start of Term
Term 2 starts Monday, 29 April. This is Day 5 on the school calendar.
Acting Headmaster Term 2
The Board is pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. Dave Russell as Acting Headmaster for Term 2.
Mr. Russell is a highly experienced and passionate leader. Mr. Russell joined Napier Boys’ in 2015 as Senior Master. Previously, he was Assistant Principal at Central Hawke’s Bay College, 2008 – 2015. Mr. Russell is honoured to take on the role and continue the positive momentum that the school has achieved in recent years.
Currently, the Board is working through a recruitment process to appoint a new Headmaster. It is envisioned that the new Headmaster will commence at the start of Term 3.
Phone-free School Expectation
From the start of Term 2, we align with the government stance on mobile phones in schools. In short, the expectation is that your son’s mobile phone remains in his bag through the school day. Please be aware that students who choose to bring mobile phones to school do so at their own risk. The school cannot be held liable for any loss or damage to the devices.
Students are not permitted to use their phone during school hours, including lunch and break times. We expect students to self-monitor and responsibly meet the expectations.
If a teacher observes a mobile phone the teacher will confiscate the mobile phone. If any student has a mobile phone confiscated or does not comply with expectations the following process applies:
First confiscation:
The mobile phone will be confiscated and kept in the Admin Block. It will then be returned to the student by Pastoral Team/School Office at the end of the school day (between 2.55 pm – 4.00 pm).
Second confiscation:
The student will receive a Dean’s Detention, and we will inform their family to collect the mobile phone from the Admin Block. If retrieving the phone or device proves difficult for family members, it will be kept at the school until 2:55pm Friday.
Third or subsequent confiscation:
The matter is now deemed to be an ongoing behavioural issue and will be considered to be continual disobedience. Napier Boys’ High School will then follow relevant disciplinary procedures.
As a school we would prefer to work with students and families in a positive and collaborative manner rather than having punitive measures in place. However, to maintain a mobile phone / device-free environment, clear expectations and consequences are warranted.
We highly value and appreciate the support of families in this regard. If families need to contact a student during the day, a message can be left at reception. Families may collect a confiscated mobile phone / device 8:30am – 4:00pm.
Uniform Shop
Students are expected to be in winter uniform from the start of Term 2, this includes the long-sleeve shirt.
The Uniform Shop returns to normal hours through Term 2 – Tuesday 3 – 4:30pm and Thursday 1:10 – 2:10pm.

Year 11 students who have not yet achieved Level 1 Literacy or Numeracy have been entered for the upcoming Common Assessment Activities (CAA). The CAA will run in Week 4 and 5 of Term 2. Students who have not yet met the requirement in either Literacy Reading or Writing have been entered into a Microsoft Team. This MS Team will have practice questions, Quill activities and important notices for these students.
