NBHS RUGBY UPDATE – ‘Hand up, not Handout’

It’s a pleasure to welcome you to the Napier Boys Rugby Programme. First and foremost, I want to extend my thoughts and prayers to those affected by the recent events in Hawkes Bay and hope that with continued support from whanau and friends within the community that we get through these challenging times together.

Not long ago, I walked into a team changing room where there was a sign that read ‘hand up, not handout’. This typifies for me, the attitude that we as a school can embrace when talking about the culture at a school. Too often, we look for what others can do for us rather than asking what is it that we can do for ourselves. All successful cultures have being built on hard-work, strong values and high standards. My expectation is that all stakeholders within the program (players, coaches, managers and supporters) reflect the Napier Boys values below, so they become the ‘fabric’ of our environment both on and off the field. As I watch games and/or trainings throughout the year, I should see and feel that these values are being followed, embraced, and acted upon.

Values of Napier Boys

  1. Respect
  2. Honesty
  3. Integrity
  4. Self discipline

Sport gives young men purpose and if done well, instills characteristics, values and behaviors that help your boys on their journey, well beyond the sports field. Research shows that those who participate in sports, do better in the classroom as a result of their participation. Young men want to belong to something bigger than themselves. Our role as educators, is to provide an environment and culture that young men not only want to be part of but one in which they take ownership.

Although enjoyment, success and remaining competitive across all grades is imperative, safety (both physically and mentally) will be a cornerstone value of the program. We also endeavor to ensure that our students play with their friends but this may not always be possible. The positive flow on effect of this is that your son will make new friends and memories!

A huge THANK YOU to all the people who have volunteered to help coach or manage a team this year. Rugby is an important part of NZ society and its national identity. The amazing support of teachers and volunteer parents ensures rugby at NBHS will hold a privileged position. Busy people are supporting our young men so please support and thank them in any way you can. In addition, please role model the Napier Boys Values no matter how challenging the circumstances may be.

We have increased the number of Teams competing this year which is great for NBHS. All Teams have being selected as evenly as possible and will be posted on the noticeboard by Ms. McCallum’s sports office. Team training times and pitch allocation will also be posted.

It is also crucial that your son’s Rugby Levy is paid before he can play his first game:
