“Climbing the ladder to improved skills, on-field success and well being”

Dear Stakeholders,

As we approach the end of the 2023 rugby season, I would like to extend my sincere thanks to all the parents/caregivers, students and of course our coaches for their contributions to a successful year. You have all played a huge part.

A special thanks and congratulations to our rugby players who have been magnificent throughout the season and represented our school community so well. Our first XV squad will now compete in the national competition which is a great achievement.

We can be very proud that Napier Boys’ have won 65% of all games played this year both at Super 8 level and within the local Hawkes Bay competitions. This is a huge positive for our rugby community and the wider school which we proudly represent. We see great potential within the rugby programme. We are motivated to ensure Napier Boys’ becomes the ‘rugby leader’ within the Hawkes Bay region and for our senior teams to be highly competitive at Super 8 and national level on a consistent basis.

To take advantage of the talent and potential in our rugby squads, it is important that we continue the journey of building alignment, developing the pathways across all facets of the game including but not limited to core skills such as:

  1. Catch + Pass
  2. Tackle + Defence
  3. Carry + Groundwork + Clean

These technical areas are fundamental to the successful delivery of our vision as a “rugby leader” and we will continue to develop these core skills at Napier Boys’

We also have the opportunity to:

  • enhance our strength & conditioning
  • build our infrastructure and coach development
  • grow our boys tactical awareness, knowledge and delivery

All of this will take time but we are working on plans to make it the Napier Way.

An important cog in the development of rugby skills and performances at Napier Boys’ is the continued care and support from parents, caregivers and coaches. Helping the boys realise their ambitions is critical. We hope you will share our vision and continue to provide that critical assistance to ensure your sons become the best that they can be.

That’s why we need parent input towards the programme direction over the next few years. We value your views and are firm believers in shared ownership and bringing key stakeholders with us on this journey to ensure we realise our vision.

There will be a variety of different views which is great and it’s important that we hear your ideas so we get that ‘buy-in’ across all levels of the community to ensure we are in the same boat rowing in the same direction. We all want your son to become the best version of himself in the future and this is a perfect opportunity for you to add value to the Napier Boys’ rugby programme.

I would appreciate if those of you who are able to contribute to our coaching and caregiving efforts to let me know by e-mail and I greatly welcome your ideas and suggestions. When we get this feedback, it will help us plan the next phase with your assistance.

Best regards

Darragh Burke

Director of Rugby
