Earthquakes and Tsunamis

Given the recent Earthquakes we have included below our Earthquake and Tsunami procedures for your information:

EARTHQUAKES:

On initial shake, order students under desks, hold on to desks and wait for second main shake.

The teacher must decide when the main danger has passed, and vacate the class as quickly as possible through any available exits. Doors should be used if possible but check for any debris falling from the above. Proceed to the main ground assembly area and follow the normal evacuation procedures.

UNLESS THE EARTHQUAKE WAS LONG (OVER 1 MINUTE) OR STRONG (DIFFICULT TO STAND UP) IN THAT CASE FOLLOW THE TSUNAMI PROCEDURES BELOW.

TSUNAMI:

Tsunamis are a result of a huge release of energy on the earth’s surface, usually following a violent earthquake. Our coastal location means that we all should be alerted to the risk of Tsunami.

If there is an IMMEDIATE Tsunami threat, the earthquake was long ( over one minute) or strong  (difficult to stand up in) ………Move immediately to the Hill (do not wait for instructions)  (Botanic Gardens)  via Georges Drive (green belt), Carlyle Street, Chaucer Rd. and Spencer Rd assembling on the main Botanic Gardens Lawn for Roll Call AND FURTHER INSTRUCTIONS

A school van will assist those with a physical disability (from the front gate)……. it will drive down the greenbelt.  If a Tsunami causing significant damage in Napier, does occur, parents will need to come and collect their son’s from the Botanical Gardens.  They will not just be released.

SH51 Napier – Hastings Route

Kia ora koutou,

The Waka Kotahi NZTA project team would like to let you know that the first stage of the SH51 Napier to Hastings Safety Improvements project is due to start on 8 May 2023. It will take approximately three months to complete (weather dependent).

The attached info sheet has gone out to residents today.

The temporary roundabout will be installed over three consecutive nights, 8, 9 and 10 May 2023. During these night works the road will be closed but there won’t be any day road closures necessary after this; two-way traffic will be maintained at all times during the day to minimise disruption.

There will be minor traffic delays during construction – please find more information on the traffic management in the attached info sheet.

This project is part of the Speed and Infrastructure Programme (SIP) and has been included in the Median Barrier acceleration programme. We’re installing median barriers on high-risk roads across Aotearoa to prevent head on collisions, save lives and reduce serious injuries. The Road to Zero strategy for 2020-2030 has set a delivery target of 1,000km of median barrier across Aotearoa New Zealand’s roads, including on both state highways and local roads. 100kms of median barrier has been installed on state highways to date - aiming to deliver a further 120km by the end of June 2024, totalling 220km (in Hawke’s Bay: SH51 Napier to Hastings – 4.5 km)

Please share this email and the project website with your contacts.

Any questions or concerns – please get in touch with our project team via SH51safety@nzta.govt.nz
