Week Ahead: Week 4 Term 2, Monday 20th May – Sunday 26th May

Co-Curricular Fees

This is a reminder that all co-curricular fees for day-students need to be paid before the event / trip, or an arrangement made with the NBHS Finance Team. Co-curricular activity fees should be paid to the Napier Boys’ High School bank account, 12-3144-0100-100-00. As a reference, please include the student’s surname and team/event.

Bus Service & Tickets

This is a reminder that students travelling on the Taradale / Tamatea / Greenmeadows school bus service must purchase tickets directly from the bus driver. This is a cash sale, only.

Bus tickets cost $3 per trip. A ten-trip ticket can be purchased for $25. Limited term passes are available from the Tranzit Office,1 Waitane Place, Onekawa between 7:00am and 2:00pm for $210 (cash sale).

The school office does not sell bus tickets.

NBHS Blood Drive

The New Zealand Blood Service will be onsite on Tuesday 21 May in the Henderson Hall 9:00am – 2:00pm. At this time, we are encouraging our senior students to contribute to this critical community service. Donations are used for those going through cancer treatment, undergoing surgery or in a traumatic incident.

Students over 16yo, in good health and weighing more than 50kg can give blood on this day.

Uniform

Thank you for ensuring that your son is in the related winter uniform and has their winter sports uniforms sorted.

We would like to remind families that all uniform items are named. As winter sports trainings begin, the lost property intake increases. Named items are easily returned.

The school uniform shop is open Tuesday 3:00 – 4.30pm and Thursday during the lunch break 1:10 – 2:00pm.  Please purchase uniform at this time. Parents do not have to come to the shop.  Encourage your young man to be independent and reliable and come to the shop on his own.

Items can be paid for with cash, eftpos or from your son’s school account (if money has been deposited / funds available to cover the cost). The school bank account # is 12-3144-0100-100-00. As a reference, please include the student’s surname and the phrase ‘uniform’. Funds must be deposited the night before they are required to allow for them to be processed onto accounts.

Health New Zealand: Winter Illness

Health New Zealand has asked that we communicate the following message in relation to winter illness, with advice related to when to keep school-age children at home.

International Student Homestay Families Needed

Napier Boys’ High School are recruiting hosts for our new international students, arriving Term 3.

We are looking for hosts to accommodate and care for new students from Germany, Switzerland, Hong Kong, Thailand and Japan. Some students are short-term. Others will stay through to the end of the school year, or beyond.

Hosting is a rewarding experience where your family will make worldwide, lifelong connections.

A generous remuneration package is available to support our host families.

If you are interested in hosting an international student and would like to know more, please contact Rachel Hammond.

Rachel Hammond, International Coordinator, rhammond@nbhs.school.nz

Upcoming Events

Please take the time to look at this school newsletter, the ‘Week Ahead’. The Week Ahead outlines upcoming school activities. Urgent updates will be pushed-out via School Bridge, or in emergency via an SMS.

We have moved to a digital school calendar. The school calendar can be accessed here: KAMAR  or SchoolBridge

Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAA)

Year 11 students who have not yet achieved Level 1 Literacy or Numeracy have been entered for the upcoming Common Assessment Activities (CAA). The CAA will run in Week 4 and 5 of Term 2. Students who have not yet met the requirement in either Literacy Reading or Writing have been entered into a Microsoft Team. This MS Team will have practice questions, Quill activities and important notices for these students. If your son is unsure if he has or has not met the Literacy or Numeracy requirement, this can be found in his results on the KAMAR portal (student or parent) or MyMahi.

Fieldtrips in Week 4

Selected Y12 Agriculture students are offsite at a shearing course Sunday 19 – Wednesday 22 May. The programme is kindly hosted by one of our Scinde House families, Sarah & Will Banks. We sincerely thank them for their support and generosity.

Level 2 Biology classes are offsite on Friday, 24 May visiting Harding Road rocky shore and National Aquarium. At the rocky shore the group learns sampling techniques that biologists use to identify and record the abundance of species found from low to high tide along a rocky shore.  At the National Aquarium the learning focus is around the diversity of animal gas exchange systems and a dissection of a fish, specifically at the structures fish use to carry out gas exchange in an aquatic environment. This field trip is part of internal AS 2.3.
