Hearing Screening Programme for Year 9 students

Napier Boys’ High School will be participating in the Hearing Screening Programme for Year 9 students in 2024. This is part of the National Foundation for Deaf & Hard of Hearing (NFDHH) Listen Up Programme.

This letter is to advise you that on 22nd-23 August the NFDHH will be testing the hearing of our Year 9 students. Please find a link HERE with information from the National Foundation for Deaf & Hard of Hearing related to this programme.

  • Youth Programme – Privacy Policy
  • Listen Up New Zealand – Participation information sheet.
  • Listen Up New Zealand – study protocol 2024.

There is contact information in this link should you have further questions.

Secondly, there is an online link to the Opt-In consent, please take a few minutes and fill this in so your son can be part of the screening programme. This information will be kept with the NFDHH (not the school) and will be used by the hearing technicians on the day.

In addition, prior to the testing being undertaken the NFDHH will seek consent from your child before undertaking the hearing test on the day. Please complete this form by Friday 21 June.

If a student’s hearing is found to be weak, the foundation follow up and make an appointment (free of charge) for the student to see a private audiologist to gauge how severe the hearing issue is. Thank you for supporting this hearing health programme. If you have any questions regarding this programme please feel free to email: gbundle@nbhs.school.nz

Upcoming Events

Please take the time to look at this school newsletter, the ‘Week Ahead’. The Week Ahead outlines upcoming school activities. Urgent updates will be pushed-out via School Bridge, or in emergency via an SMS.

We have moved to a digital school calendar. The school calendar can be accessed here: KAMAR  or SchoolBridge

Senior Subject Selection, 2025

Course selection information will be made available in Week 4 for students going into Y11 – Y13 in 2025. This information will be made available via email. At this time, you will receive a link to download the Course Guide, 2025 and instructions how to input the subject selection via SchoolBridge.

We encourage you to collectively make an ‘informed decision’ regarding the selection of subjects. Making an informed decision means talking to various parties. For example employers, tertiary institutions, teachers, deans and our Careers Adviser, Mr Te Rito.

At home, encourage your son to lead out conversations and inquiries related to:

  • What I enjoy doing?
  • What am I good at?
  • What do others say I am good at?
  • What type of career / industry is going to give me the most enjoyment? Job satisfaction? Work / life balance?
  • Career pathways – what subjects are required for possible careers? Up to what level of NCEA?
  • School subjects and learning areas – what credits are available? Are these Achievement or Unit Standards? What pathway(s) does the subject track toward? Employment? Tertiary?

NCEA Information Night

With recent changes to Level 1 NCEA and the Literacy and Numeracy requirements, the school is hosting an NCEA information night for parents. This information night will allow you to ask questions about the recent changes, how this may affect your son’s academic outcomes and how this may affect his course planning for 2025. This is intended for parents with sons in Year 11. This event will be held at 7:00pm in the Memorial Library on Wednesday 21 August.

Parents will be asked to RSVP through a SchoolBridge form that will be emailed out to Year 11 students.

For further information, please email gbundle@nbhs.school.nz

Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities

Students who completed the Literacy and Numeracy Common Assessment Activities (CAAs) in Term 2 have had their results released. They can check this through their MyMahi, Kamar or NZQA profile.

NCEA Late Submission Policy

We would appreciate your support to ensure that your son meets the set deadlines for their internal assessments. Most NCEA internal assessments are completed during class time. Students can submit their work electronically through MS Teams or by completing in-class assessments.

If your son requires an extension past this deadline you are required to complete this form.

Extensions will be granted upon completion of the form and one of the following scenarios:

  • illness, accident, bereavement, or a family crisis
  • timetabled school activities, such as field trips
  • sporting or other fixtures where a student is required to represent the school
  • national or regional representation in sport or other activities.

Where the school receives no communication around a missed deadline, NZQA requires that the school report a Not Achieved grade.

Derived Grade/Benchmark Exams

The school have scheduled our Benchmark exams for Week 10 of Term 3. All students completing NCEA subjects should be present for these exams. These exams allow students to have a derived grade if they are unable to sit or are affected by illness during the end of year exams. NZQA requires the school to report a grade before the external examinations for each student. Each year, the school processes over 30 derived grade applications for students who due to unforeseen circumstances, cannot attend the exams. It is important that your son attends these exams in the final week of the term to allow him to have a derived grade if an unforeseen event occurs.
